The First Step Is Not a Diet. It Is a Sheet of Paper.

How do we rebuild the relationship with our bodies? Not with a plan. With an honest inventory of what you already know is wrong.

How do we rebuild our relationship with our own body, from the beginning, if we are seriously thinking about putting our lives in order? What is the first step?

It is not a diet. It is a sheet of paper and a pen.

The question I ask first

When a woman comes to me, the first thing I ask is not what she eats. It is: what do you think you need to change?

And a great deal of the time, she produces the answer herself, unprompted.

I go to bed too late.

I wake up far too early to train, at the expense of sleep.

My eating has no structure and no routine.

I do not take my supplements. I never take them consistently.

I do not drink water.

I have had low iron for twenty six years and never treated it.

My vitamin D has been low for twenty five years and I have never taken anything.

She knows. She has always known.

Why this matters more than the protocol

There is a reason I start here rather than with a plan.

The habits that are undermining a woman's health are almost never a mystery to her. What has usually happened is that she has built an explanation around each one that allows it to continue. There is no time. It is a busy period. It will settle down after this month.

Real change begins when someone stops justifying the problem and confronts it honestly.

You cannot fix something you are still explaining away.

What to actually do

Take a sheet of paper. Sit down. And write down, honestly, what you think you are doing wrong.

Not what a nutrition article told you. What you already know.

Then stand in front of the mirror and be honest.

If you cannot make the changes on your own, then go and find a specialist. That is a legitimate answer, and it is a considerably better one than continuing to explain to yourself why this month is not the right month.

What this is not

This is not about blame, and it is not about shame. I want to be clear, because women are extremely quick to turn honesty into self criticism.

A great deal of what goes wrong is not a personal failing. It is the result of decades of contradictory information, from childhood right through to menopause. I cannot count how many women have told me they thought they were eating well, thought their portions were sensible, and it turned out they were doing almost everything wrong. That is not stupidity. That is the information environment they were given.

The honest inventory is not a list of your faults. It is a list of the things you actually have control over.

Then, and only then, a plan

Once that list exists, the work becomes specific. We are no longer trying to improve health in general. We are addressing four or five identified things, in an order, one at a time.

That is a completely different exercise, and it is the one that works.
